KARACHI, April 2: Changing climatic conditions, coupled with airborne dust particles and pollen, is contributing to the high incidence of allergy, in varied forms, across the country.

Nasal allergy is particularly observed among Karachiites, owing to their being inhabitants of a coastal city and exposed to humid climatic conditions and extreme form of air pollution.

According to doctors, people suffering from nasal allergy can be seen sneezing with watery discharge from the nose. The discharge may become thick, turning yellow or greenish in colour due to bacterial infection.

Overactive mucous glands in the mucous membrane of the nose is said to cause an enlarged turbinate in a way that heavy exercise causes skeletal muscles to increase in mass.

The best treatment for allergy is to avoid factors triggering the allergy. When these cannot be averted, such as climate, dust, smoke, etc, the affectees are suggested to take anti-allergic drugs under the supervision of a qualified doctor.

As in certain instances bacterial infection may infuse allergic conditions, antibiotics are also advisable, but again must be prescribed by a doctor and not taken on a self-medication basis.—APP
