18 die, 72 held in Chechnya

MOSCOW, March 28: Russian troops killed 18 Chechen rebels, more than half of them in air strikes, and made 72 arrests during a series of operations in the breakaway republic, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday, quoting military authorities.

Russian jets carried out 32 missions on Thursday over the mountainous region in the southeast of the republic, killing 13 rebels, the Itar-Tass news agency said, quoting the Russian command in the North Caucasus.—AFP
