RAWALPINDI, Oct 16: Villagers affected by the unprovoked and indiscriminate shelling from across the working boundary by the Indian troops have said that Monday’s shelling was on an unprecedented scale, but failed to dampen their spirits.

They were talking to foreign journalists on Tuesday who visited the areas along the working boundary in Phukhlian sector that came under shelling by Indian troops, ISPR officials said in a press statement.

The shelling with mortars and rocket-launchers resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to another 30, who have been admitted in a Sialkot hospital. Seven of the injured and the woman belonged to the same family.

The villagers have been quoted as telling the foreign journalists that the exchange of fire with small arms was a routine affair, but this time’s shelling was unprecedented.

VICTIM DIES: A teenage boy who was wounded in the unprovoked Indian firing along the Line of Control in Azad Kashmir on Monday night succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, police said, our staff correspondent in Muzaffarabad adds.

A police official told Dawn here that the Indian troops resorted to heavy shelling on Monday night in the Mandheri, Batal, Darra Sher Khan, and Hajira villages of district Poonch.
