RAWALPINDI, April 28: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has approved a post of SSP Traffic for the “Model Traffic City” police being established in Islamabad, official sources said. Meanwhile, a uniform gala was held here on Thursday to select the best uniform for the model traffic police. Out of eight uniforms, three were chosen for approval by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. The uniform will be selected by the prime minister in the final stage, the source said.

The Finance Division has already approved Rs65.9 million for recruitment of 100 personnel, streamlining of traffic system and enforcement of traffic rules in the capital.

The recruitment criteria will be similar to that of Motorway Police, excepting the height which has been fixed at five feet and nine inches.

The source said the recruitment process would be completed in a couple of days.

A senior police official told this reporter that the district administration had demanded Rs200 million for implementation of the plan, however, the Finance Division approved Rs65.9 million.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had expressed his concern over poor traffic management in Islamabad and directed the authorities concerned to prepare a plan to make the capital a model traffic city.

In line with the directives of the prime minister, the capital police prepared an action plan and sent it to the Finance Ministry for release of funds. The plan would be implemented in two phases.

Besides the communication equipment, 82 vehicles, including 42 cars, eight jeeps and 32 motorbikes, would be needed for the model traffic city police.

Twenty-five per cent share of fine money would go to road safety, 25 per cent to police welfare, while the remaining 50 per cent would go to government exchequer.

The source said the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had been asked to prepare a five-year development plan of roads based on vehicle and population increase. According to statistics, traffic volume had increased to 47 in the capital during the last three years.
