RAWALPINDI, Feb 10: Provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Basharat Raja has asked Ulema to cooperate with the local administration to avoid any untoward incident during Muharram.

The provincial minister was presiding over a meeting of Ulema at the office of District Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani on Thursday.

Religious scholars and Ulema from different schools of thought, district nazim and other officials of the local administration attended the meeting.

Mr Raja stressed upon Ulema to follow the code of conduct enacted by the Punjab government and refrain from unnecessary use of loudspeakers.

He said Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had constituted committees which would visit different areas and divisions to meet local Ulema and appeal them to extend cooperation to the administration.

The minister said copies of the code of conduct had been sent to Ulema professing different fiqh. He said all mosques and Imambargahs would be provided with metal detectors. No one would be allowed to distribute any objectionable literature or make sect-related speeches, he added.

Similarly, he said, nobody would be permitted to openly air recorded religious speeches', adding that any such material would be confiscated and its possessors subjected to action.

Speaking on the occasion, the district nazim said for the last several years, Ulema had shown unity and extended cooperation for maintaining law and order during Muharram.
