KARACHI, Feb 7: The transport and communication department of the city government will devise a comprehensive traffic control plan to deal with the problem of increasing vehicular traffic in Karachi.

A feasibility study will also be conducted at about 26 spots in the city to assess environmental pollution caused by smoke from the vehicles.

This was decided at a meeting, chaired by EDO Transport Dr Tahir Soomro, held at the City Government Secretariat, Civic Centre.

The meeting also decided that the feasibility study would be conducted in presence of the representatives of traffic police and other stakeholders, besides Suparco experts all of whom would be invited to a meeting to be convened soon by the city government.

The study, involving Suparco mobile labs, would identify the adverse effects on environment, human health, air, water, plants due to the smoke emission.

As part of the assessment, blood test of traffic police personnel, shopkeepers, hawkers, drivers and other people would be conducted.

The spots selected for conducting the study include Tibet Centre, Numaish, Maulvi Musafir Khana, Jamaa Cloth Market, Garden, Tower, Burnes Road, Empress Market, Teen Talwar, Mauripur, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Karimabad and Sohrab Goth.-PPI
