Gas leak kills 18 teenagers in Spain

Published February 7, 2005

MADRID, Feb 6: Eighteen Spanish teenagers were gassed to death at a country inn on Sunday, apparently due to a gas container accidentally being left open after they had spent all night celebrating a birthday, emergency services said.

Earlier police put the death toll at 17 and said the cause of the accident had not been determined. But it was believed a container for cooking or heating purposes had accidentally been left open all night, causing carbon monoxide poisoning.-AFP
