KARACHI, Jan 29: The city council, condemning the attack on Malir Town Nazim Naveedul Islam by activists of a political party and registration of cases against some union council nazims, demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the attack.

The city council meeting was presided over by Senior Presiding Officer Muslim Pervez on Saturday.

Criticizing Sindh government for interfering in city government affairs, Juman Darwan of Awam Dost Panel said that the provincial government should not create hurdles in the working of city government. Praising city nazim's services to the city, Mr Juman said that Naimatullah Khan was being punished for restoring glories of Karachi and playing significant role in its development.

He condemned the attack on Malir Town Nazim in presence of local police along with SHO of police station concerned and demanded authorities to pay attention towards the matter and give exemplary punishment to the culprits.

At the meeting, Jaffer-i-Tayyar Union Council Nazim Jafferul Hasan clarifying allegations levelled against him by the KBCA regarding contempt of court, denied the assertion and said that he was called up by the KBCA to maintain law and order during its demolition operation in his union council. Despite the fact that he and other union councillors rescued KBCA staff from enraged residents who attacked KBCA staff, a case was registered against him and councillors, he added. He urged the authorities to release innocent people arrested by the police in the said incident.

Habib Hasan implored creators of devolution plan to secure the system, saying that local government should be accepted if constitutional umbrella was provided to it.

Sajjad Dara expressed solidarity with Jafferul Hasan and denounced the attack on Malir Nazim. He demanded the government to abolish local government system if it had been failed to carry on the system.

Qazi Sadruddin of Al Khidmat Group lamented hide snatching on Eid from seminary of eminent religious scholar Mufti Munibur Rehman. He criticized DCO's role in transfer of city government officials. According to him, it is a move to slow the pace of development in Karachi. He urged that the DCO Karachi should be impeached.

About 12 resolutions were passed unanimously during the session demanding arrest of outlaws involved in assault on Malir Town Nazim, withdrawal of FIR against UC Nazim and councillors of Jaffer-i-Tayyar, ban on obscene programmes aired by cable TV, annul interest charged on CDGK officials of BPS-16 and above grades.

Besides, the councillors were unanimous that notifications, funds, cheques, letters should be sent directly to the union councils. They also demanded city government's representation in various departments and stake holders including Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan Railway Board, Allama Iqbal Open University and other institutions.-PPI
