Hunt on for another wanted person

Published November 19, 2004

LAHORE, Nov 18: Law-enforcement agencies have launched a hunt for the arrest of another wanted man on the information gleaned from Naveedul Hasan, a Harkatul Mujahideen-al-Aalmi activist.

Carrying a bounty of Rs2 million, Hasan was reportedly arrested from Lahore a few days ago. His arrest was confirmed by Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao late on Wednesday night in Islamabad.

Terming it a big achievement, Mr Sherpao had said that the suspect would not be handed over to the US, and would be tried in Pakistan.

Hasan was wanted in two bomb blasts in 2001 and 2002 in Karachi, including one that had targeted the American Consulate.

The suspect had been arrested on a tip-off received from another suspect of the Daniel Pearl murder case, Asim Ghafoor, who was killed in an encounter in Karachi on Wednesday.

An Interior Ministry source said that law enforcement agencies had got more information from Hasan, and they were looking for the arrest of another important man figured in the consulate bombing. Raids are being conducted to this effect, he said and hoped of a breakthrough soon.
