KARACHI, Nov 4: A meeting presided over by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Thursday decided to construct Thado dam and to develop a lake in Gadap Town.
Sindh Irrigation and Power Secretary Ashfaq Memon, EDO (Finance) Shakeel Naqvi, technical advisor to the city nazim, Salim Azhar, and others attended the meeting.
The meeting was informed that the dam and lake projects had been lying pending since 2002 owing to financial constraints. The city nazim assured the meeting that all possible cooperation for the project would be extended by the city government.
"Development of a lake in an area adjacent to the Super Highway will provide a recreational spot to the people of Karachi, as well as help in beautification and improvement of environment", the nazim observed.
The meeting decided that both the schemes would be completed by June 2006 with the active support of the departments concerned.
The city government will release Rs20 million to the Sindh Irrigation and Power department for the projects in the current fiscal year and will allocate Rs22.5 million for the purpose in the next financial year.
Sindh Forest department and Horticulture department of the CDGK, would prepare special plans for beautification of the area around lake and dam.
ACADEMY: The city government is all set to establish a Quran-o-Sunnah Academy to provide knowledge related to Quran and Sunnah. A centre will also be established to consolidate creative work regarding the Quran and Sunnah.
This was decided in a meeting held with the City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, in the chair on Thursday. The Naib-Nazim, Tariq Hasan, EDO Community Development Iqbal Zubedi, Chief Instructor NIPA Mohammed Akif, Adviser to the City Nazim for Media Ansar Razi, Nazim Barkati and other officers also attended.
The centre would arrange courses not only for citizens, but also for elected representatives, police and employees of the city government. The academy would also prepare, publish and provide books, journals, audio-visual cassettes, CDs and videos.
The meeting decided that the board of the academy would hold a meeting once every month in which the academy's performance and other matters would be reviewed.
Members of the board of governors would include the city nazim, naib-nazim, EDO Community Development CDGK, chairmen of Quran-o-Sunnah and Arabic Departments, University of Karachi, Director Islamic Research Academy Karachi, Regional Director Dawaa Academy Karachi, and Chief Instructor NIPA Karachi.
The city nazim said that competitions should be organised on provincial, national and international levels on Islamic topics with the assistance of educational institutions and through other means.
He stressed the need for making arrangements for Islamic programmes for women, and shape the thoughts of society according to Quran and Sunnah.
The Naib-Nazim Tariq Hasan said that mental nurturing was also important along with developmental works, and the Quran-o-Sunnah Academy would take part in providing Islamic teachings to people in this regard.
The meeting also decided to hold a meeting of the board of governors on December 9 in which recommendations presented by the committee would be reviewed.
EID BAZAAR: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan inaugurated an Eid Bachat Bazaar at Al-Markaz Islami, Aisha Manzil, on Thursday.
This bazaar has been set up by the community development board of the city government on directives of the nazim. At the bazaar, various items of daily use will be available on reduced rates.
Nazim Naimatullah Khan said at the ceremony that provision of cheap items in the bachat bazaar would be ensured. He visited different stalls and inquired about products from the shopkeepers. "Provision of different items on reduced rates is the basic objective behind setting up of this bazaar," he said.
EDO for Community Development Iqbal Zubaidi, District Officer for Community Saifurrahman Grami, nazim of the area Mahmood Barkati and other officials were also present at the inauguration. - PPI
