KARACHI, June 3: Nazim Naimatullah Khan has begun visiting all the Towns to help solve the city’s water and sewerage problems.

He will exchange views with the union council Nazims and issue on-the-spot orders for the solution of their areas’ problems. DCO Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, the Town Nazim and a member of the City Council committee will accompany him.

As the first leg of his tour, the Nazim on Monday visited North Karachi Town and met the Nazims of union councils at the Hakim Ahsan Library.

Naimatullah Khan said the city government’s efforts were to solve the city’s water problem and this would be achieved with the cooperation of elected representatives.

He defended the policy that no officer or employee should remain in one area for a longer period and should be transferred after a couple of years.

The Nazim said that in Karachi many problems were being solved through the Khushhal Pakistan Programme and this process of development would continue.

He said the people should also show their responsibility and pay the bills of government departments in time so that these may not face any financial handicap.

The Nazim said every month the KWSB was paying funds to union councils and Towns for emergency works. He said the union Nazims should make proper use of this money.

DCO Shafiqur Rehman Paracha said that all decisions to be taken during the visit would be implemented in letter and spirit. However, the union Nazims should also solve the sewerage problem from their own resources in case of an emergency.

The managing director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, Behram Khan, said that efforts would be made to solve the problems of people in the shortest possible time.

He said a water and sewerage plan had been prepared on a directive of the City Nazim for kutchi abadis which would be supplied water in phases after the availability of additional water.

He said on pointing out by Nazims, strict action would be taken against officials found lacking in their duties. He said 35-40 officials and employees had already been dismissed from service because of mismanagement on their part.

He said action would be taken against those employees who would show negligence in serving the cause of people.

On the occasion, Town Nazim Shafiqur Rehman Usmani said that work on repair of 150 manholes in the Town was continuing while orders had been placed for the production of 5,000 manhole covers.—APP
