More parties to join ARD

LAHORE, Oct 28: Alliance for Restoration of Democracy chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim says the incumbent system will go along with Gen Pervez Musharraf.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday before a hurriedly-called meeting of the alliance for discussing the Kashmir formula given by Gen Musharraf, he said even in the past all systems given by dictators had gone along with them.

He claimed that more parties would join the 17-party alliance soon, as contacts were being made for this purpose.

About the ARD's stance on the new Kashmir formula, he said they believed that only the plebiscite ingrained in the UN resolutions could settle the issue.

"Seemingly the ARD constituents have disapproved the formula. However, any formal decision on it will be taken after consulting colleagues (in the alliance)."

The Makhdoom said frequent military take-overs and resultant military-civil connivance had hindered progress and prosperity of the masses.

He denied having said they were ready to hold conditional or unconditional talks with the government on the uniform issue. He, however, said if Gen Musharraf extended any such offer he would discuss it with ARD components before taking a decision.

Also present on the occasion were Tehmina Daultana, Nawabzada Mansoor, Munir Ahmad Khan, Prof Ijazul Hassan, Mushtaq Awan, MPAs Azma Bokhari and Faiza Malik, Syed Naubahar Shah, Munir Husain Gilani and Saifullah Saif.
