MIRPURKHAS, Aug 28: Nine members of a family including children were killed and 20 others injured when a truck hit a camel-cart on the Mirwah Gorchani-Mirpurkhas road on Saturday.

The family was going to Chaudhry Ghulam Mohammed village from Soomro colony, Mirwah Gorchani, when the accident occurred.

Those killed were identified as Abbas, 12, son of Iqbal; eight-year-old Adnan, son of Ashraf; Abida, 12, daughter of Ghulam Hussain; Ashfaq, 12, son of Zulfikar; Nazia, 16, daughter of Iqbal; Khalida, 15, daughter of Ashraf; Sajida, 20, daughter of Ghulam Hussain; two-year-old Eshrat, daughter of Allah Ditta; and Asif, 12, son of Aashiq Ali.

Those injured included Sardaran, Akbar Ali, Zarina, Saima, Liaquat Ali, Gulnaz, Shazia, Shahnila, Sumaira, Zulfikar, Aamna, Mehnaz, Zarina, Ashfaq, Zubaida, Shakeela, Nazia, Anila, Safia and Manzooran.

All the victims were travelling on the camel-cart.

Residents of nearby villages rushed to the spot and started the rescue work. The police also reached the spot.

Emergency was declared in the rural health centre, Mirwah Gorchani, and the Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas.

The bodies were taken to the RHC Mirwah Gorchani and later handed over to relatives.

The truck driver escaped after the accident. The truck was impounded by the police.

The family was going to condole a death of a relative in the village. The cart was damaged completely whereas the camel remained safe. The injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital.

The Sindh minister for tourism and culture, Shabbir Qaimkhani, and the zonal in-charge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Saleem Razak, reached the hospital.

No case was registered by the Taluka police till the filing of this report.
