ISLAMABAD, June 18: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali on Friday directed law-enforcement and intelligence agencies to adopt a proactive approach aimed at preventing terrorist activities rather than reacting to such incidents.

The prime minister was presiding over a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation in the country. The meeting discussed a number of proposals to improve security situation.

Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat, interior secretary, chief secretaries, inspectors general and home secretaries of the four provinces and Islamabad's chief commissioner and IGP also attended the meeting.

The prime minister lauded Sindh police for nabbing a large number of criminals involved in terrorist activities. Sindh officials made a detailed presentation on the crime situation and performance of law-enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Measures to prevent terrorist activities were discussed in detail. It was observed that better and enhanced coordination between the law-enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies on the one hand and between the provincial agencies and those of the federation on the other were required to prevent crimes.

The meeting observed that the provinces should have efficient crime investigation departments (CID) which should be more vigilant and work in close liaison with security and law- enforcement agencies.

"We are facing a different situation. The nature of crime has changed and we are faced with terrorism too. It is altogether a different situation," said the premier. Meanwhile, Minister for Housing and Works Syed Safwanullah and Minister for Communications Babar Khan Ghauri jointly called on Mr Jamali at the prime minister's secretariat.

They discussed the political situation and matters pertaining to their ministries. The ministers discussed development schemes for their constituencies with particular reference to providing drinking water to the Mehmoodabad area of Karachi. The prime minister assured them that his government would take along all its allies.
