Jones replaces Read in ODI squad

LONDON, June 12: England have replaced wicket-keeper Chris Read with Geraint Jones for the one-day triangular series with New Zealand and West Indies.

The 14-man squad for the tournament, which begins on June 24, also includes Lancashire fast bowler Sajid Mahmood for the first time.

Kent batsman Robert Key, who featured in last year's home one-day internationals, returns after an impressive season in the English county championship.

Jones took over from Read as wicket-keeper for the final Test of four against West Indies in April and scored a century in the nine-wicket victory over New Zealand at Headingley earlier this week.

However, Read retained his place in one-day side in West Indies and was named Man-of-the-Match after scoring 27 to guide England to victory in the opening One-day International in Guyana.

"The selectors discussed the wicket-keeping position at length before choosing this squad and thought long and hard over the respective merits of Geraint Jones and Chris Read," England's chairman of selectors David Graveney said in a statement.

"Geraint has the ability to bat in a number of different positions and this was an important factor in reaching our decision."

Gareth Batty, Rikki Clarke and James Kirtley are the other players omitted from the squad that toured West Indies.

England have picked 14 players, as this is in line with squad requirements for the ICC Champions Trophy which starts in England in September.

"We also feel that past experience shows that a 15-man squad can lead to certain players being under utilised during the course of the tournament," Graveney added.

England play New Zealand in the first game under floodlights at Old Trafford in Manchester on June 24.

Squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), James Anderson, Ian Blackwell, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Darren Gough, Steve Harmison, Geraint Jones, Robert Key, Sajid Mahmood, Anthony McGrath, Andrew Strauss, Marcus Trescothick.-Reuters
