UNITED NATIONS, April 17: Pakistan has proposed a special UN Security Council meeting on peace-keeping in May when it assumes the presidency of the Council, Pakistan mission sources told Dawn.

Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri who will come to New York specially for the special "peacekeeping" event, would preside over the council proceedings which will assess the world body's increased needs since four new peace-keeping operations are being stipulated.

The council would assess the financial needs and the troops requirements for such operations.

The countries where new peacekeeping operations are being stipulated include, Sudan, Burundi, Ivory Coast and Haiti.

The Security Council will also discuss a new UN Security force for Iraq which could include forces from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and other South Asian nations.

The Issue of the new resolution on Iraq will also be debated by the Council.
