BAGHDAD, March 13: The brother-in-law of a member of Iraq's interim Governing Council was killed in a bomb attack in Baghdad's Karrada shopping district on Saturday afternoon, a political party official said.

"Haidar al Qizwini was Dr Ibrahim al-Jaffari's brother-in-law," an official from the Dawa party said, adding that another person was wounded in the explosion.

He could not say if Haidar Qizwini's killing was politically motivated.

Earlier, the US military said one man had been killed and another wounded in the attack.

"One Iraqi was killed and another wounded," said Major John Frisbie.

Witnesses said they saw three people wounded in the blast, which a neighbouring shop owner said targeted a perfume shop owned by one of Mr Jaffari's relatives.

A bespectacled man who appeared to be in his 30s stood with a newspaper by the store and dropped a bag and walked off to a white car just before the explosion, Khalid Hamza Abbas said.

The status of the injured was not immediately clear. -AFP
