Osama alive, in region: Karzai

Published February 1, 2004

KABUL, Jan 31: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Saturday that Osama bin Laden "is alive and may be hiding somewhere along the rugged Afghan border with Pakistan".

His comments came days after US officials expressed confidence of capturing the Al Qaeda leader this year and revealed plans for a spring offensive to track terror suspects.

Meanwhile, a written statement purportedly from Taliban leader Mulla Omar vowed to defeat American forces in Afghanistan.-APP/AP
