NEW YORK, Jan 31: Kashmiri groups here and in Washington have planned peaceful vigils and demonstrations to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir on Feb 5.

In New York, the groups plan to demonstrate in front of the United Nations calling for self-determination for the Kashmiris.

However, in light the of the peace process between India and Pakistan, the expression of support for the Kashmiris are expected to be understated as the Kashmiri American Council has planned a "Candle Light Vigil" in front of the Indian embassy in Washington DC, on Thursday, Feb 5.

In a press release, the council said it welcomed the launching of a peace process between India and Pakistan. "It has created a new aura of hope in the entire region of South Asia," it said.

An amicable climate, it said, will no doubt help in the resolution of the issues involved, "but more is needed than mere gestures and atmospherics".
