Names of women councilors notified

Published April 16, 2005

GILGIT, April 15: The Northern Areas Election Commission has notified the names of women councillors for local bodies elections, who were elected indirectly to the four municipal committees and four district councils in the region.

The notification, however, did not mention the details of women councillors from the two remaining districts of the region, including Diamer and newly created Astore district.

However, sources said no women had filed nomination papers from these two districts for the seats reserved for women, despite the fact that the government had increased the quota of women up to 33 per cent in local bodies.

The names have been notified after six months as the elections for the local bodies were held on Oct 13, 2004.

The names of Zakira Batool, Tahira Perveen, Syeda Zehra Begum, Miss Safia and Mrs Bano have been notified for the Skardu Municipal Committee, while those of Hasina, Zahida Taskeen, Tahira Ali and Zayeda Tahira have been notified as members of the Skardu district council. In Gahkuch, the headquarters of the Ghizer district, the names of Mrs Gul Feroze and Niyat Bibi have been notified for the Gahkuch Municiapal Committee while Yasmeen Nazar, Zubaida Bibi and Naheed Zaman for the the Ghizer District Council.

In Gilgit the notification did not show the names of women members for the Gilgit Municipal Committee, but Yasmeen Alijan, Perveen, Naveeda Akhtar, Ambar Khatoon and Shakeela Khatoon are notified as members of the Gilgit District Council.

In the Gangche Ddistrict, Kaneez Fatima, Mrs Habiba and Khadeeja have been notified as members of the Khaplu Municipal Committee while Nashida, Zobaida Musa and Bilqees as Gangche District Council members.
