MITHI, April 15: Members of the Tharparkar District Council have demanded that the government should take fool-proof measures to ensure transparent distribution of relief wheat among drought-hit people. Tabling a resolution at the council’s session here, Mr Bherulal pointed out that lists of people of various villages had been prepared by revenue officials without consultation with and approval of union council nazims.

However, nazims have been assigned the task to monitor the wheat distribution.

The member said nazims would not be responsible for any embezzlement of relief wheat because they had not been consulted while preparing the lists.

Abdul Latif Rahimoon alleged that officials of the revenue department, Nagarparkar, were demanding bribe of Rs500 per depot keeper for verification of population lists and challan of wheat. He demanded an inquiry into the matter.

Mr Mohanlal, Mr Haresh Kumar and other members said instead of 1998 population lists, wheat should be distributed on the basis of the present population.

Giving his ruling, convener Ramsingh Sodho said devising a policy to ensure transparent distribution of relief wheat among people would be discussed with the DCO and other officials.

Moving a resolution, Abdul Rahim Khoso said the director-general, health, had issued directives for shifting of a costly X-Ray machine provided by the Japan government from the Nagarparkar Taluka Hospital to the Arbab Mir Mohammad basic health unit which would deprive residents of Nagarparkar of the facility. He said the X-Ray machine should not be shifted.
