KARACHI, April 15: Against 30 million gallons a day (mgd) of water requirement the SITE industrial area is getting only eight mgd from the Karachi Water Sewerage Board, and the shortfall is being met through water tankers and hydrants. Besides, there is also power shortage in the area. To overcome these problems the SITE industrialists were willing to have water and power from alternate sources and in this regard a presentation was arranged by the SITE Association of Industries (SAI) for its members to discuss the situation of water and power.

According to a press release the industrialists were informed that a Spanish company had planned to initiate a project by offering 25 mgd water and 27mw of power to Site area through wind power technology by desalination of the sea water at Hawksbay. The water would be potable at the rate of Rs110 per thousand gallons and power at the rate of Rs4.80 kwh to the industries.

Site industrialists agreed to purchase entire production of water and power at competitive rates of Rs80 and Rs4 respectively.

The Spanish sponsors of the project had assured the supply of water and power at the required rates provided the land for the project is leased out by the Sindh government for 25 years.
