WASHINGTON: The United States is close to a decision to evacuate US personnel from its embassy in New Delhi, possibly in conjunction with a more urgent warning to Americans in India, an official said on Thursday.

The decision would be to withdraw all embassy dependents and non-emergency staff because of the danger of war between Pakistan and India.

“It could come any day now,” said the senior State Department official.
