Duty cut on kinnoo sought

Published April 12, 2005

ISLAMABAD, April 11: Pakistan will seek duty concession on export of kinnoo to Indonesia under the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries. An official told Dawn on Monday that Pakistan among other products would seek duty reduction up to five per cent on kinnoo export, which Indonesia had offered to China under the preferential trade arrangement.

The cabinet has already authorized the commerce ministry to initiate a dialogue on the proposed FTA with Indonesia shortly.

Pakistan’s export of kinnoo declined during the last two years because of duty preferences available to Chinese exporters.

Kinnoo is a major exportable fruit of Pakistan with 32.5 per cent of total exports to the Middle East alone, followed by 22.5 per cent to Indonesia, 16 per cent to the Philippines, 11.6 per cent to Sri Lanka and the remaining 17.4 per cent to other markets of the world.
