KARACHI, April 7: A close associate of gang leader Arshad Pappu was killed in what police claimed an encounter carried out jointly by the SITE and Lyari town police in Jehanabad on Thursday. TPO Lyari Omar Shahid told Dawn that Ghaffar alias Dhobi was considered to be the close associate of Arshad Pappu and was wanted in about 35 criminal cases.

Police said they raided Lashari Mohallah. A police party, headed by SHO Pak Colony, engaged in a encounter which resulted in the death of Ghaffar. Following the encounter, police teams of Industrial Crime Unit also reached the spot and retrieved the body of Ghaffar from Lashari Para as women had taken away the body into narrow streets of Lashari Mohallah.

Police shifted the body to Civil Hospital for post mortem. A hand-grenade and a Kalashnikov were recovered from the possession of Ghaffar alias Dhobi.

The deceased was instrumental in collection of extortion money on behalf of Arshad Pappu from industries and other businesses. In addition, he was also active in carrying out kidnappings for ransom, the TPO added.

KILLED: A young man killed his aunt and wounded her daughter in Al-Falah early Thursday morning.

Police said Rahib Khan barged into the house of his aunt, Metha Magsi, in Gulshan-i-Akbar and opened fire on his aunt. Police said during firing victim’s daughter Nazeeran also suffered injuries.

However, suspect escaped from the spot following the killing. Police said Metha Magsi had refused a proposal by Rahib Khan who wanted to marry Nazreen. Police shifted the body to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities. The wounded girl was also provided treatment at the hospital.
