FAISALABAD, April 4: As many as 31 activists and leaders of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal have been sent to the district jail on a two-day judicial remand by an anti-terrorist court here on Monday. The arrested MMA leaders and workers, including district president Sardar Zafar Hussain, JUI district Amir Sajid Farooqi, JI city Amir Prof Mehboobuz Zaman Butt, MMA general secretary Jawed Malik, IJT Nazim Rana Amjad Hussain, Shbab-i-Milli president Muhammad Nawaz, Rana Waheed, Dr Saeed, Sikadar Ali, Zaki Ahmed, Dr Ghulam Murtaza, Rai Akram Kharal, Saleh Akbar Khan, Abul Hasan and Shabbir Hussain, were taken to the ATC amid tight security arrangements.

Police submitted in the court that the MMA activists had been accused of creating law and order problem, damaging the public property, attacking the people and police and forcing the traders to close down business.

The activists’ counsel refuted the police claims, saying that the arrests were made without any cogent reason and in violation of the prescribed rules. The MMA leaders were not in groups of more than four persons, therefore, the police had no right to round them up.

The court issued orders for the production of the accused on April 7, and sent them to district jail on two-day judicial remand.

Meanwhile, Kotwali police have registered another case against MMA district president Sardar Zafar Hussain and 30 other activists for creating law and order problem. The case has been registered under section 7 of the Anti Terrorist Act and 188 PPC.
