Pakistan recover thanks to Arsalan

MULTAN, March 26: Arsalan Anwar scored a fine undefeated century on Saturday to help Pakistan reach a creditable first innings score of 330 on the third day of the second and final Under-19 Test against Sri Lanka at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Arsalan hammered 13 boundaries on his way to 103 off 216 balls in three and half hours of stubborn resilience after the home had stuttered to 118 for five in reply to Sri Lanka’s 405 on Friday.

The tourists extended their lead of 75 to 191 runs by making 116 for two in the second innings. Like the first Test in Karachi, this one is also heading towards a draw with only one day remaining.

Fawad Alam, a promising left-hander, continued his excellent run in the series with his third successive half-century after Pakistan started the day at 160 for five.

Fawad made 75 off 119 deliveries while stroking six fours and one six. The overnight sixth-wicket partnership between Fawad and Arsalan was worth 143 priceless runs.

Speedster Charita Jayaweera captured three of the five wickets to fall on Saturday to finish with five for 120 in 30 overs. Fellow paceman Salitha Karunanayake dismissed last Mohammad Shahzad for third wicket of the innings.

Sri Lankan vice-captain Angelo Mathews chipped in with two wickets with his brisk medium-pacers.

Batting a second time, Sri Lankan opening pair of Upul Tharanga (30) and captain Harsha Vithana (10) got out to medium-pacer Zohaib Ahmed.

However, Dimithri Siriwardena (38) and Kaushal Silva (26) consolidated the innings by putting on 71 for the unfinished third wicket stand.
