PESHAWAR, Jan 23: Police detained an Afghan journalist and kept him in the Hayatabad police station for three hours, sources told Dawn on Sunday.

Abdul Mueed Hashimi, Afghan reporter of Pashto language newspaper Sahhar, was going to meet a colleague in Hayatabad when the police detained him near the police station, said the sources.

"SHO Jamroz Khan and other police officials abused me when I introduced myself as journalist," alleged Mr Hashimi. He said that at the same time, the police arrested an Afghan worker, Aziz, of a foreign NGO. "We arrested Hashimi and Aziz on suspicion and released the newsmen after interrogations," said Javed, an official of the police station.

FOUR DIE: Meanwhile, four persons were killed in separate incidents during the Eid days in and on the outskirts of the city, police officials said. Omar Bagh of Charsadda told Chamkani police that his brother-in-law Burhan had killed his (Omar's) sister Mumtaja over a domestic dispute in Dalazad village and escaped.

Burhan was the second husband of his sister and younger brother of the first husband who died many years ago. In another incident, Mohammad Imtiaz, son of Haji Muaaz, was run over by a passenger van on the main Kohat Road in Badhber area on Saturday. Police have arrested driver Bakhat Mir.

On Friday, a watchman was found dead in the house of a Peshawar University teacher. Hawash Ali of Charsadda told the Campus police that he had come from the village to greet his cousin Haji Marjan Ali, watchman of Prof Ferozuddin.

But when Hawash Ali entered the servant quarters of Marjan, he found the cousin dead. A speeding car ran over 20-year-old Aamir, son of Noor Rehman, on the Ring Road on Saturday evening. The driver had fled with the vehicle after the accident, the police said.
