PESHAWAR, Jan 9: Sub-inspector Safdar Zaman, killed in an encounter with a proclaimed offender in Haripur on Friday night, was laid to rest in a graveyard near Choi in Khanpur with full police honour on Saturday.

Inspector-General of Police Mohammad Raffat Pasha, DIG, Hazara, Rao Ameen Hashim, Raja Sikander Zaman, provincial minister Raja Faisal Zaman, Pir Sabir Shah, district nazim, SP Haripur, SP Batagram and other police officials, prominent social figures attended his Namaz-i-Janaza here on Saturday.

The IGP expressed grief and sorrow with members of the bereaved family. He offered fateha for the departed soul and prayed to Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage and fortitude to the grieved family to bear the irreparable loss.

The IGP said that Sub-Inspector Safdar Zaman had established an example of bravery, gallantry and performance of duty. He said that scarifying precious lives in the line of duty and ensuring protection of life, honour and property of the general public was the hallmark of the NWFP police force.

He directed the district police to arrest the SI's killer at the earliest. The IGP ordered the enlistment of the son of the deceased in the force after passing the matric examination. He is now in 9th class.

He also announced that heirs of the deceased will be paid full salary with allowances till March 2005 and Rs500,000 under the Shaheed Package. He also announced free education for the children of deceased policeman. Two widows, seven boys, two of them disabled, survive Safdar Zaman. -APP
