Avalanche kills 4 Indian troops

SRINAGAR, Jan 6: Four Indian soldiers were found dead on Thursday after being reported as missing since a snow avalanche last weekend in the occupied Kashmir, a police spokesman said.

The four had gone missing on Saturday after an avalanche triggered by heavy snowfall hit them in Kupwara district, police said. A fifth soldier was rescued on the same day in injured condition.

Kashmir received heavy snow at the start of the New Year, closing the main highway connecting the Kashmir Valley with Jammu and other parts of India. It also snapped road links to many frontier areas in Kupwara and Baramulla. -AFP
