FISHERMEN: Fishermen of the coastal belt remain in fear of harassment by Rangers personnel while going to their traditional fishing areas, with some such incidents being quoted by fishermen since the past three days.

Fisherman Mithan Mallah said that they were law-abiding citizens and did not want any confrontation with law enforcement agencies, in fact, they often bore victimization patiently.

He said that till finalization of the policy, the government should issue authority letters to the fishermen so they could earn their livelihood. Meanwhile, sources at the fisheries department said that licences to 700 fishermen would be issued till the final decision.

PROTEST: Employees of the district council and their children staged a sit-in for the 14th consecutive day to protest against allotment of the council's shops to union council nazims and others.

They claimed that they had tenancy rights over the shops, which had been in their possession since long and were the source of their livelihood. The allotments were made through the back door, they alleged. They demanded that the authorities cancel the allotments/leases forthwith.
