MIANWALI, Jan 3: Flash floods in otherwise dry Kurram river that claimed nine lives on Sunday also caused widespread damage to livestock and farmland, says the Isa Khel tehsil administration.

"It (the flood) also swept away hundreds of goats, sheep, cows and standing crops over more than 50,000 acres," Isa Khel Nazim Muhammad Altaf Khan said.

He said bodies the eight children and a woman, all members of a gypsy family, had been recovered. He identified the dead as Jehangir Khan (6), Dunyia Khan (8), Daulat Khan (4) - sons of Mehrab Khan.

Muhammad Akram Khan (10), Afridan Bibi (8), Mangla Bibi (6) - sons and daughters of Painda Khan. Fazalur Rehman Khan (10) and Rehmat Bibi of Mastoo Khan and Ghulam Bibi, wife of Moosa Khan.

Hailing from Khost, Afghanistan, the ill-fated family had been encamped in Isa Khel since long, raising animals for its survival. The flash floods, first in two decades, were caused by Nullah Ghambir which fell into river Kurram near Lakki Marwat and heavy rains over nearby hills.

The Isa Khail Nazim requested the Punjab government to give compensation to affected families besides declaring the area clamity hit.
