ISLAMABAD, Dec 21: The technical committee on water resources will on Wednesday take up the issue of assessment of water reservoirs. The committee on Tuesday discussed some internal issues. Its Chairman A.N.G. Abbasi will hold a press briefing at the conclusion of the meeting.

Officials said there were differences between Sindh, the Water and Power Development Authority and Punjab, and the planning division regarding the estimated water reservoirs. There was a proposal, they said, to build at least two dams of six million acre-feet each.

There were 147MAF water reservoirs in the country, they said. Sindh was against new dams because it believed that the country lacked water even to fulfil the demands of the provinces, they said.

The government had directed the committee to complete its assessment of water availability by the end of November, but it has sought more time to complete the task. Sources said Mr Abbasi was confident that the water assessment issue could be finalized during the current meeting.
