PESHAWAR, May 27: An anti-terrorism court here on Monday remanded four alleged robbers in police custody for seven days.

The accused — Babu Khan, Nasir, Sabir and Ziaur Rehman — were caught red-handed when they entered a residence in Gunj area here on May 23.

Officials of Gulbahar police station contended before the court that the accused were members of a notorious gang of dacoits and were required in various offences. They requested the court to allow their custody for the purpose of interrogation.

The court, presided over by Akhter Zareef Khan, allowed seven-day custody to the police, directing them that the accused should be produced after a week.

The accused had reportedly entered a house in Gulbahar Colony and decamped with some jewellry, money and a video cassette recorder after holding the inmates hostage at gunpoint. Later, they entered another house in Gunj, but were caught red-handed.

The woman from whose house jewellery and money were looted identified the four accused. Two women were also accompanying the accused at the time of the offence but they managed to escape.

Appeal filed: A convict sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in the murder and kidnapping case of dental surgeon Jawed Iqbal, has filed an appeal before the Peshawar High Court.

The appeal was filed by Asadullah Chamkani advocate on behalf of the convict, Waqarul Mulq, who was sentenced to death on two counts last week.

The appellant claimed that he was innocent and falsely implicated in the instant case by the police. He stated that the trial court overlooked various important points while convicting the appellant.

He stated that there was no eyewitness account against him and on the basis of circumstantial evidence he had been awarded sentence. He maintained that even the circumstantial evidence was in his favour, but the court did not consider those points.
