KARACHI: Hearings adjourned

KARACHI, Dec 14: A number of cases listed for hearing on Tuesday were adjourned as the court recessed after tea break to mourn the death of Advocate Imtiaz Ahmed Lari.

Pakistan Bar Council vice-chairman Rashid A. Razvi and Sindh High Court Bar Association president Akhtar Hussain, condoling the death of the senior lawyer, said it was a loss to the profession.

Mr Lari, who expired at 74 on Tuesday after a short illness, excelled in insurance and admiralty cases. Among the cases adjourned were a petition moved by the wives of Docotrs Akmal and Arshad Waheed against their preventive detention under the Anti-Terrorist Act.

A division bench, comprising Justices Anwar Zaheer Jamali and S. Ali Aslam Jafri put off the hearing to Dec16 at the request of the petitioners' counsel, M. Ilyas Khan. Another case adjourned to a date in office was a suit instituted by the provincial government against grant of 99-year leases by the city district government.

The suit is being heard by Justice Ataur Rahman and Additional Advocate-General M. Ahmed Pirzada and Advocate Manzoor Ahmed are appearing for the plaintiff and defendant governments, respectively.
