Clarification

Published December 12, 2004

In its edition of November 13, 2004, Dawn carried a report on the proceedings before the Lahore High Court, Bahawalpur Bench, in the matter relating to the challenge made to recent amendments in the Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Act. Regretfully, Dawn inadvertently misreported the Hon'ble Court's order dated 12.11.2004.

The correct position is that the High Court had, after notice to the returning officer, suspended the operation of the returning officer's notification and not the operation of the amending ordinance. A similar error was made in reference to the said order dated 12.11.2004 while reporting on the constitution of a full bench by the learned chief justice of the Lahore High Court and the dissolution of the full bench in its editions of 22.11.2004 and 24.11.2004.

Dawn regrets that its readers were conveyed the impression that by the order dated 12.11.2004 the learned single judge had suspended the operation of the impugned ordinance when in fact he had not done so. Dawn apologises for the lapse.- Editor
