KARACHI, Dec 5: Sindh Minister for Women Development Dr Saeeda Malik has said that midwife is the backbone and first line of defence of healthcare system and developed countries have controlled maternal deaths only with skilled midwives.

Speaking at the Midwifery Graduation Ceremony 2003-04, organized by the Aga Khan Health Service Pakistan on Sunday, she said maternal and infant mortality rate was very shameful in Pakistan, so midwives were much needed in society to cater health needs of community. She stressed on graduates to be a role model in their communities and impart knowledge to other people as well.

She acknowledged the services of the AKHSP and said that its midwifery programme was unique. She further said that the government was committed to empower women as it was vital for progress and prosperity of the country. "There are a lot of skills in our citizens, but, they need encouragement. We also have dedicated health workers," she said.

Earlier at the Lamp Lighting Ceremony, the minister lit a candle as a symbol of Florence Nightingale, first midwife of the world. Later, the minister distributed certificates with candle among 96 students.

Chairman AKHSP Dr Hanif Esmail expressed hope that new graduates would light more candles and work for elimination of poverty and sufferings of people. He stressed students to continue their profession even after getting married.

AKHSP Chief Executive Officer Peter Hatcher said that the organization was committed to provide safe, affordable, high quality primary and secondary level healthcare to population without distinction of cast, creed and colour. -PPI
