ISLAMABAD, Nov 26: Top seed Nomi Qamar ended the giant-killing run of veteran Hameed-ul Haq on Friday but had to sweat in so doing before advancing to the final of the Federal Cup ranking tennis championship.

Nomi, who scored a 6-3, 7-5 victory will now play Asim Shafik in Sunday's men's singles final at the PTF Complex. Hameed, who had beaten 4th seed Inam Gul and 8th seeded Shahzad Khan on way to Friday's semifinal, put up a good fight again and created all sorts of difficulties for his opponent. But Nomi kept his nerve to take the match.

In the other semifinal, 3rd seed Asim Shafik defeated upcoming Wasif Cheema 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Asim was in fine touch particularly in the final set which he won without dropping a game.

The men's doubles competition saw a major upset - the team of Nomi Qamar and Muhammad Shafik knocking out the top seeded pair of Rashid Malik and Jalil Khan in the semifinals 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Asim Shafik and Shahzad Khan proved too good for Mahmood Khan and Wasif Cheema, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the second semifinal. Meanwhile in the women's singles event, Mehvish Chishtie and Nida Rahim set up a clash in the final. Mehvish swept aside 2nd seed Maira Rahim 6-1, 6-0 while Nida Rahim edged Seher Khawaja 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
