PESHAWAR, Oct 7: Five under-construction small dams in Fata are scheduled to be completed by the end of the current fiscal year while work on two other dams would be taken in hand soon.

All the projects are part of a comprehensive plan to construct 12 small dams in Fata, costing Rs1.05 billion. The NWFP Governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, stated this during a presentation on the construction of 12 small dams here on Thursday.

The Governor's Fata secretariat has entrusted the task of identification of sites and preparation of feasibility studies of small dams in Fata to NESPAK. The presentation was also attended by the chairman of Governor's Inspection Team, Iftikhar Ali Shah, secretary to governor, Sahibzada Saeed Ahmad, and additional secretary, planning and development, Fata, Aftab Akbar Durrani, besides officials of NESPAK.

The meeting was told that as many as 161 places had been identified where construction of small dams was possible. Of these places, 47 had been selected as potential dam sites, where 41 storage dams for irrigation, one check dam and 5 water supply dams could be constructed.

The meeting was informed that the process of preparation of feasibility reports and other documents in this regard would be completed by Feb 15, 2005.
