KARACHI, Oct 6: The owners of the Shahi Supari obtained on Wednesday protective bail in a case pertaining to smuggling of 27 tonnes of betelnut.

Shamim Khatoon and her spouse Ghiyas Uddin were given pre-arrest bail in the sum of Rs500,000 each by the special customs and taxation court, headed by Judge Salman Ansari. The case, pertaining to the smuggling of a supari consignment, worth Rs13.1 million, was registered by the Customs authorities on Jan 23.

FINAL ARGUMENTS: An anti-terrorism court fixed Oct 9 for hearing final arguments in a murder case against a worker of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi. Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5, who was to hear final arguments from special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum and defence counsel Ghulam QAdir Jatoi on Tuesday, put off the matter on the request of the defence counsel.

Kamran alias Asif alias Uncle alias Mehmood, who carried Rs3 million reward on his arrest, was charged with killing a passer by woman and attempting to kill policemen during a shootout with police party on May 19. A junior to the defence counsel informed the court that Mr Jatoi could not attend the court as he was out of the city.

SHOW-CAUSE: The judicial magistrate, East, Shaista Hamid, issued show-cause notice to two investigation officers of six different sectarian murder cases against two workers of the Tehreek-i-Jafferia for their failure to submit final charge- sheets in the cases.

The judge also ordered the investigators, SI Safdar Iqbal and Mirza Sanaullah, to submit final charge sheets till Oct 10. The activists, Ali Raza alias Farishta and Abbas Ali alias Ashura Wala, were booked by the Soldier Bazar police in the murder cases.

ACQUITED: Additional District and Session Judge Syed Saeed Hasan on Wednesday granted an acquittal application filed by Mohammad Adnan, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, in the murder case of Iqbal Raad, a former advocate general, add agencies.

Iqbal Raad was shot dead with Shahzad Khatri and Ghulam Abbas on March 10, 2000, near Passport Office, Saddar Karachi. MQM activists Sohail Ahmed, Ajmal Pahari, Mirza Asif Beg, Mohammad Kaleem and the applicant, were named as accusedin the case.
