KARACHI: KMTP review meeting held

Published September 28, 2004

KARACHI, Sept 27: Foreign companies intending to take part in the Karachi Mass Transit Corridor Projects will be invited to a meeting to be held at Civic Centre so that they could present their detailed explanations regarding their proposals, technology, terms and conditions, project cost, time-frame and procedure for execution before the Procedure Committee.

A decision in this regard was taken at a high-level review meeting of the Karachi Mass Transit Project here on Monday. City Nazim Naimatullah Khan told the meeting that the city government had chalked out six mass-transit corridors to provide commuting facilities to people.

He said the mass transit corridor projects were in the interest of Karachi and their implementation was an essential need of the hour as this project had been awaiting execution since 1952.

The nazim said the companies desiring to take part in the mass transit project on a BOT basis would be encouraged. The DG for Mass Transit, Malik Zahirul Islam, said that proposals were invited from local and international companies for the implementation of the mass transit project and seven companies expressed their intent for participation and submitted their proposals with terms and conditions.

He said these companies hailed from Malaysia, China, the United States and other countries. It was decided that recommendations would be prepared after examining the conditions and technology submitted for mass transit.

The meeting was presided over by the general-manager of Railways, Maj-Gen Hamid H. Butt. It was attended, among others, by DCO Mir Hussain Ali, DG Mass Transit Malik Zahirul Islam, and Chief Planning and Development Division Salahuddin Qureshi. - APP
