ISLAMABAD, Sept 17: The record pertaining to 341 vehicles of other districts re-registered by the Excise and Taxation Officer in Islamabad during the last five years was placed before the National Assembly by the interior minister on Friday.

The record was provided in response to a question by MNA Muhammad Hanif Abbassi, who had asked the interior minister to tell the number of vehicles re-registered by the ETO Islamabad on production of NOC during the last five years with name of previous owner, present owner, old number, new number, place of previous registration, date of NOC and the date of registration in Islamabad.

On a supplementary question, MNA Mehmood Khan Achakzai, asked the minister to explain the reason why some 128 vehicles were re-registered with an Islamabad number by the Military Intelligence, Inter Services Intelligence and other military officers.

Explaining the position, the minister of state for interior, Dr Shahzad Waseem, said there was nothing wrong if the vehicles were re-registered. He said the government servants or permanent residents of the Capital could get the vehicles re-registered with an Islamabad number.

However, the MNAs did not question the government about the growing complaint that stolen vehicles were being re-registered in the capital. The record placed before the House showed that sensitive agencies, military officers and bureaucrats got the vehicles bearing registration number of other districts re-registered in the capital.
