Who voted for PML-N nominee?

Published September 15, 2004

LAHORE, Sept 14: The ruling PML and opposition parties are trying to find out the MPA who voted for the PML-N candidate, despite the boycott decision taken by the ARD and the MMA.

The election on the seat vacated by Mr Shaukat Aziz was held in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday. Provincial assembly members are the electoral college for the Senate. The ruling had put up Sardar Mehmood Khan while the PML-N fielded ex-MNA Birjees Tahir.

According to results, the PML candidate polled 245 votes. While the ruling party wouldn't say how the opposition candidate could get a vote, a PML-N leader 'thanked' Malik Ahad (a turncoat) for supporting the party colleague. Rana Sanaullah Khan said in a statement that despite the fact that Malik had joined hands with the ruling party, he voted for Birjees.

The PML-N has prepared a reference against Malik for changing loyalty, but it is waiting for an appropriate time to file it with the speaker to seek the disqualification of the 'turncoat'.
