ISLAMABAD, Sept 1: The following are brief profiles of the new federal ministers who took oath on Wednesday along with 21 members of the previous cabinet:
AMANULLAH KHAN JADOON (MNA FROM ABBOTTABAD): Born on December 6, 1940, in Abbottabad. He was elected on the PML-Q ticket. An agriculturist by profession, he completed his B.Sc Engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology, USA. He had been elected to the NWFP assembly in 1985 and 1988.
He served as provincial minister for planning and development in 1985; provincial minister for communications in 1988 and the federal minister for Kashmir affairs in 1993.
GHULAM SARWAR KHAN (MNA FROM RAWALPINDI): Born on October 13, 1955, in Taxila. He previously served as a member of the Paunjab Assembly for the terms of 1985-1988 and 1994-1996 and was affiliated with the Pakistan People's Party. An agriculturist by profession, he holds a BA degree from the University of the Punjab. He served as the provincial minister for health during 1994-1996.
JEHANGIR KHAN TAREEN (MNA FROM RAHIM YAR KHAN): Born on July 4, 1953, in Comilla, East Pakistan (Bangladesh). He was elected MNA in 2002 and is affiliated to the PML-Q.
An entrepreneur by profession, Mr Tareen did his graduation from the FC College, Lahore, in 1971, and MBA from the University of North Carolina, US, in 1974. He has been a lecturer, banker and entrepreneur. He headed the Punjab Task Force on Agriculture from 1997 to 1999 and the Punjab Task Force on Wheat Procurement and Marketing from 2001 to 02.
MUHAMMAD WASI ZAFAR (MNA FROM FAISALABAD): Born on January 12, 1949. He was elected to the National Assembly on the PML-Q ticket in 2002. He had earlier served for two terms as MPA.
A lawyer by profession, he had got a BA degree in 1969 from the Gordon College, Rawalpindi, and LLB in 1971 from the University of the Punjab, Lahore. Mr Zafar served as Secretary of Lahore High Court Bar Association from 1982 to 83. He remained an MPA from 1988-90 and 1993-97.
MUHAMMAD SHAMIM SIDDIQUI (MNA FROM KARACHI): Born on August 14, 1950, in Hyderabad (Sindh). He has been elected on an MQM ticket. He completed his B.Sc in 1969 and M.Sc in Statistics in 1971 from the University of Sindh. His occupation is business, export-related. He worked for six years with the finance department of the Nigerian government.
MUSHTAQ ALI CHEEMA (MNA FROM FAISALABAD): Born on May 10, 1951, in Faisalabad. He was elected MNA for the first term in 2002 on PML-Q ticket. A businessman by profession, he holds an M.Sc Commerce degree.
CHAUDHRY SHAHBAZ HUSSAIN (MNA FROM JHELUM): Born on November 13, 1944, in Jhelum. He was elected MNA for the first time on PML-Q ticket. A businessman by profession, he holds an LLB degree. He was engaged in business in Saudi Arabia before his election to the National Assembly.
DR SHER AFGAN KHAN NIAZI (MNA FROM MIANWALI): Born on January 1, 1946, in Mianwali district. He was elected MNA for the fourth time in 2002. He was elected on the PPP ticket and later joined the Patriots group.
A medical practitioner by profession, he completed his MBBS in 1968 from the Nishtar Medical College, Multan. He won the National Assembly elections in 1985, 1988 and 1993. Dr Niazi served as federal minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs; human rights; social welfare and special education from 1993 to 1996.
MIAN SHAMIM HAIDER (MNA FROM SHEIKHUPURA): He won the NA seat on PML-Q ticket. He is a graduate with a B.Sc degree in civil engineering from the University of London.
LT-GEN (RETD) JAVED ASHRAF QAZI: He was elected senator on PML-Q ticket on a general seat from Punjab. He served as the director general of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and was federal minister for railways in President Musharraf's cabinet before the October 2002 elections.
JUSTICE (RETD) ABDUL RAZAQ THAHIM: He was elected senator on PML-F ticket on a general seat from Sindh.
