SUKKUR/LARKANA, Aug 10: A major power breakdown hit Sukkur, Rohri and the entire district of Larkana on Tuesday as major faults developed in the Guddu thermal power plant and the Liberty power plant in Ghotki.

With most of interior Sindh still in grip of an intense heatwave, with daytime temperatures crossing 42 degrees Celsius in some places, the power failure added to the misery of the people.

It was the fifth time in the past one month that faults at the Guddu plant seriously affected power supply. According to the regional control centre, L-4 and L-3 lines supplying power to Sukkur and Rohri, have been damaged and repair work was under way.

A major fault, which had developed a few days ago and affected most of interior Sindh and parts of Balochistan, was repaired on Monday. While the lines for Jacobabad, Shikarpur and parts of Balochistan were restored on Tuesday, the 132KV line supplying power to Sukkur and Rohri broke down.

The supply situation in Larkana worsened when besides the fault in the Liberty plant, a high-tension line of 132KV broke down plunging the city, sub-divisional headquarters and villages into darkness. An alternative supply arrangement from Jamshoro proved short-lived, sources in Hesco said on Tuesday night.
