HARIPUR, July 19: Ishtiaq Ahmad and Jamilur Rehman were declared elected naib nazims in the by-elections held on Monday of the union council City 1 Shumali Haripur and Kalinjar.

The assistant election commissioner, Haripur, had declared the Shumali seat vacant after the election tribunal had disqualified Abdul Saboor Qureshi in its judgment on the petition of Shahid Amin Khan.

Saghir Ahmad, the then naib nazim of Kalinjar, was unseated when 17 members moved a no-confidence against him last month. There was a one-to-one contest for the Shumali seat between Mr Ishtiaq Ahmad and Nadeem Mehmood Lodhi. Mr Ahmad was declared winner with 839 votes while Mr Lodhi could secure only 20 votes.

The number of registered voters in the constituency is 8,120 but the turnout remained below 10 per cent. Four votes were rejected. For the Kalinjar seat were two candidates in the race. According to official results, Mr Jamil-ur-Rehman won the seat bagging 1,296 against 1,293 polled by his rival Mohammad Aslam.
