BANGKOK, July 16: Indian film star Shabana Azmi on Friday called upon South Asian leaders to do more to help protect the young from the threat of HIV/AIDS.

"Let's get real about HIV and AIDS," Ms Azmi said, adding: "The danger lies in not telling them enough about the choices they have, and in failing to give them the knowledge and support that can keep them safe."

Shabana Azmi was speaking at a "Meet the Leaders" session along with Pakistan's Health Minister and the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs from Afghanistan.

Shabana Azmi said older generations are not open enough with young people about the risky behaviours that can lead to HIV infection. She said that young people - especially those most at risk - needed a safe and supportive environment and access to prevention, care and treatment services. -APP
