RAWALPINDI, July 12: The joint committee of Pakistan and Italy on defence collaboration has stressed enhanced cooperation between the two countries in the field of defence here on Monday.

The Pakistani side was led by Defence Production Division secretary Air Marshal (retired) Zahid Anis while the Italian side was represented by the secretary-general of Defence and National Armaments Directorate, Gen Gianni Botondi.

According to a press release issued here by Ministry of Defence, the committee reviewed the progress of ongoing defence production projects between both the countries and discussed future areas of cooperation.

The Defence Production Division secretary gave a detailed perspective of various projects between Pakistan and Italy, highlighting specific areas of defence requirements of the Pakistan armed forces.

He asked Gen Botondi to encourage the Italian defence industry to come forward and offer its hi-tech equipment to the Pakistan armed forces. The secretary informed the visiting delegation that "it would be very helpful if the Italian government considers to be more liberal in granting export licences to the Italian defence industries enabling them to export defence equipment to Pakistan without any hindrance.

Gen Gianni Botondi also apprised the Pakistani side of the production capability of Italy and the modern equipment held by its armed forces. He emphasized that cooperation between Pakistan and Italy was very useful for both sides.

He further stated that cooperation between the two countries was also progressing in other fields as well. He thanked the Pakistan government for extending warm welcome and hospitality to him and members of his delegation.
