Greece wins Euro Cup

Published July 5, 2004

LISBON, July 4: Outsiders Greece crowned their astonishing Euro 2004 campaign by beating hosts Portugal 1-0 in the final on Sunday.

Greece, who had never previously won a match at a major tournament, lifted the second-most prestigious trophy in the sport thanks to a 57th-minute header by Angelos Haristeas.

The result ended the dreams of Portugal, also appearing in their first final, and underlined again that Greece's 2-1 victory over the hosts in the tournament's first game three weeks ago was no fluke. -Reuters
