PESHAWAR, June 17: The father of a minor boy who was treated at the Khyber Teaching Hospital after being severely beaten by his teacher in a religious school in Swabi district has appealed to Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to order the arrest of the assailant.

Adil Raza, 13, a resident of Manki village in Swabi district, was admitted to the orthopaedic ward of the hospital with high temperature and wounds on his left leg and back. Doctors at the hospital had to conduct several operations to save his leg from amputation.

The boy's father, Zarwali Khan, sent a letter to the prime minister on Thursday and appealed to him to order the arrest of the teacher of the seminary at Nabi Killey, Lahore tehsil, who had mercilessly beaten his child.

He pointed out that an FIR had been lodged with the local police station but said the authorities were reluctant to lay hands on the teacher. The boy was sent by his family to the seminary, Madrassatul Banat, as his father, who was a labourer, has been bed-ridden for four years due to paralysis and he could not afford to send his son to a school.

Zarwali Khan said the accused, Qari Shahid, and his father Qari Mohammad Ismail, the patron-in-chief of the madressah, were pressurizing his family for a settlement but he vowed that he would continue his struggle to get justice.

He said his son was beaten up on May 22 but the family came to know about it on May 25 when his condition had deteriorated. He alleged that the boy was thrown on the roadside, from where somebody brought him home. He said the FIR had been lodged on his behalf by an activist of a non-government organization.
